FAQ

I've climbed before, what do I need to do to belay at WRG?

You'll just need to take a quick belay test in order to receive a belay card from Wilmington Rock Gym. The belay test is free. Be sure to call ahead before coming in to take the test.

Can anyone climb?

Just about everyone who wants to may climb. We offer climbing options for everyone from toddlers on up.

What do I need?

Only a can-do attitude and a willingness to try. We have all the equipment you need available at the gym.

Can I bring my own gear?

You are welcome to bring your own gear provided it is in good working order. We reserve the right to make this judgement. This includes climbing shoes, harness, belay device, chalk bag, etc.

Waiver Policy

Everyone who enters the climbing area, including spectators, parents who are just belaying, photographers, etc must sign a visitor's agreement. Minors must have one signed by their parent or legal guardian. To read and download the visitor's agreement, click here.

Can a grandparent/aunt/uncle/teacher/friend's parent sign the waiver for a minor?

No.  Our visitor's agreements must be signed by the minor's parent or court-appointed legal guardian. To read and download the visitor's agreement, click here.

Is any experience required?

No experience is necessary to enjoy indoor rock climbing! We'll be happy to help instruct you through a belay class, group climbing class, or one-on-one lessons.

Is adult supervision required?

Children under age 14 must be supervised by an adult. If climbing in a group, one adult must be present for every 6 underage climbers. All climbers under 18 must have a parent/guardian-signed waiver in order to climb with or without an adult present.

Is an appointment required to use the gym?

No appointments are necessary to climb, but if you have to take a belay class, you need to sign up in advance.

Do I have to buy a day pass if just belaying for my children/spouse/other?

If you need to learn to belay for your children, you will need to sign up for a belay class and pass a belay test to receive your belay card. Following that, you are welcome to belay your children for free assuming that you will not be climbing as well.

Is there an hourly rate?

No. We offer a day rate or a membership (monthly). Click here for more information on pricing.

What is the minimum age to climb?

There is no minimum age to climb. All we ask is that you, as the legal guardian, are comfortable with them climbing. In general, we find kids ages 3-4 who can comfortably walk have a great time climbing.

What is belaying?

Belaying is taking the slack out of the rope as the climber ascends the wall. This means if the climber falls they will be caught by the belayer. If you have a belay card from another gym or are an experienced climber and can pass a quick belay test you can get a belay card from Wilmington rock gym. Otherwise you must take a belay class and then pass our belay test.

How long does it take to learn how to belay?

New climbers need to take the 2-hour belay class here at WRG. See rates and how to reserve here. After taking the class, you will need to pass the free belay test. We recommend plenty of practice time before taking the test so you will have a better chance of passing on your first try. Talk to your instructor for the best way to practice.

What is minimum age to belay?

Belayers must be at least 14 years old.

Do you provide belayers?

Yes, we do provide belayers for a fee. Please call for reservations. See rates here. We also have several bouldering routes.

Do you have lead climbing?

We do not currently have lead climbing.

What clothes are suggested?

Loose or stretchy comfortable pants are recommended. If wearing a baggy shirt, make sure it is long enough to tuck into your harness.

Are climbing shoes required?

You are welcome to wear clean street shoes, but climbing shoes make climbing much easier. Shoes must be laced or velcro for safety reasons.

Are shoes required?

Yes. No one wants to use handholds and footholds that smell like sweaty feet, ya nasty!
