Belaying is taking the slack out of the rope as the climber ascends the wall. This means if the climber falls they will be caught by the belayer. If you are an experienced climber, or have experience belaying, and can pass a quick belay test you can get a belay card from Wilmington Rock Gym. Otherwise you must take a belay class and then pass our belay test. Belayers must be 14 years old or older to belay at Wilmington Rock Gym.
We offer a 2-hour class called "Intro to Top Roping" where you will learn to belay. You will learn how to properly put on your harness, tie a figure-eight-follow-through knot, and belay in a safe and secure manner by properly removing slack and supporting the climber safely. This class will prepare you to take the Top Rope Belay Test that will allow you to belay in the gym without staff supervision.
The minimum age to belay is 14.
